Ann Arbor professional photographer Mike Gould self-portrait in mask store in New Orleans

Photography

I am an experienced commercial, product and event photographer. I specialize in commercial photography for the web, informal portraiture, and concert photos of musicians. I also have a lot of experience taking pictures of food, art glass, craft products and jewelry. (And the occasional UM football game.)

I have a black belt in Photoshop and extensive experience preparing photos for the web; I can work from scanned prints, negatives, or any digital format. I can repair old photos, create montages, and do creative photo manipulation.

I have been making photographs in Ann Arbor since the early 90's, first with a Kodak point-and-shoot, then a Canon Rebel, then a Canon Elan IIe, then with a series of increasingly higher-resolution digital jobbies. I currently shoot with a Canon 5D MK II, a 7D, and a shoulder-straining collection of professional lenses. A current equipment listing is found at the bottom of this page.

My pictures have been published in The Ann Arbor Observer, Ann Arbor News, Chelsea Standard/Dexter Leader, Metro Times, Current Magazine, and various places on the Web.

I was the photographer for the University of Michigan School of Education, and have been published extensively on their web site and in their quarterly publication, The Innovator. You can download PDFs of this publication; my work is in issues starting with No. 34, Vol. 2, and I made the pictures for all the magazine's covers since no. 35, vol 1.

Availability

I am available for hire throughout Michigan as photographer in the following contexts:

I have a photo studio at MondoDyne where I shoot product photos for my various web clients. Examples are below. I do most of my shooting at client's locations, bringing seamless backgrounds, strobes and enthusiasm to the party. For most commercial jobs, I shoot tethered: my camera is hooked to my laptop so that clients can instantly see the images they are getting.

Equipment

I am currently using Canon 5D MK II and 7D Digital SLR cameras and the following lenses:

I have the usual panoply of flashes, softbox, seamless backdrops, and gobs of CF RAM. To ensure the highest possible quality, I shoot in RAW mode.

I provide archival prints using an Epson Stylus Photo R2000 printer.

Fees

I charge $80.00 per hour, which includes travel time.
For shoots involving travel, there is a 2-hour minimum. Travel beyond the city limits of Ann Arbor will entail a $.40 per mile mileage fee.
